Chemerinsky and Irvine
Brian Leiter has the best summary I’ve yet seen of the Chemerinsky / UC-Irvine fiasco. I had the pleasure of meeting Professor Chemerinsky a couple years ago, and it’s difficult to imagine a better choice to give a new law school instant credibility. Chemerinsky is almost universally respected as a scholar and a lawyer, he’s an extremely personable fellow, and he’s an excellent speaker. No matter what his political leanings (and these can’t have been a secret to anyone when the offer was made), it was quite a coup for Irvine to snag him. And it’s hard to imagine who would take the job now. Perhaps Alberto Gonzales is available…
